member that idiot that blasted himself into the sky a whopping 1800 feet to prove flat earth? He’s back with an even crazier, even more stupid plan...and frankly if he gets funding to try it he is 100% going to kill himself.
Cutting in after all the cringy pandering to the science illiterate.
A high altitude balloon, then a rocket shoots through it, then...science happens?
I don’t condone the death of anyone so it’ s a little scary...that being said you can’t stop people from being stupid so go for it Mad Mike.

Some lessons are best learned empirically.

So, using physics to disprove physics.
I gotta hand it to this Mike guy on two counts, though. First, he built a rocket and actually flew it and lived. That’s an incredible combination of balls, skill, and luck. Second, there is a lot of merit in the “prove it to me” mind set. Really, not blindly accepting what people tell you is the start of critical thinking, which is sorely lacking in today’s “educated” population. What this guy is lacking is the next step, which is intelligently evaluating the data that others have collected before you. Our body of knowledge is based on the concept of everyone building on the shoulders of others. There are mountains of credible evidence showing that the Earth is round. If you’re not saying it’s fabricated, then you have to ask why you don’t trust it and have to test yourself.

I hear you. There is so much accumulated knowledge that its practically impossible to move forward without taking some of it on faith. I mean, have you ever seen any of those youtube shows were they have to learn to make simple things from scratch? Its crazy. On the other hand, there are principles that are testable and provable by most people that can be a foundation for building confidence in that general body of knowledge.
Mad mike though...i mean the thing is is that he’s already proved some parts of the science he hopes to disprove through “trial and error” efforts but hasn’t thought to consider the why, only “it works but I know really know why or how”. I mean, if you understand the principle of the force vectors in a rocket launch ...you kind of have to have a basic understanding of the forces of gravity.

Looks like nature may find a way... to eliminate the weak.

You raise an important point. Our basic STEM education from the elementary level on includes simple experiments that test the principles we teach. We can’t send every student up in a rocket, but we can and do make simple demonstrations of physical principles like ballistics . One of us on here a couple weeks ago even posted the easiest demonstration of round Earth, and anyone can do it. It’s watching a ship lower on the horizon.

that was me, I think. This video? Anyway yeah. My oldest is big into the STEM thing and im hoping she keeps it, she has a real passion for it now, we often talk about space and the earth when I tuck her in.

That’s it. Funny.
I don’t try to cite individual names when I can’t remember who it was, because I figure it’s worse to mis-attribute.
You could send this to Mad Mike with a suggestion of a much less life threatening experiment he could do. But where would be the fun in that?

Everyone has some value to humanity. Sometimes you work your entire life to improve our understanding of the cosmos, sometimes your just the guy who dies t rying to prove people can run faster than a tiger.
This guy is definitely the latter.

A Greek calculated the circumference of the Earth in 200 BC or so and it was remarkably accurate.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eratosthenes#Measurement_of_the_Earth’s_circumference
These things can be figured out with a bit of math and some thinking.

This is true. Your two stated requirements are often obstacles to much of today’s populace.

It’s been done successfully already (and hey look, curvature! ) and it probably took a whole lot more money than this guy is ever gonna raise . I hope everyone who contributes is at peace with the idea of being part of an assisted suicide.
